The arrival of Whole Foods in Columbia next year will “step up the game” of like-minded grocers already in the market, one expert said.

That could mean good things for consumers – who are likely to see more variety, better prices and more creativity, said Marianne Bickle, director of the Center for Retailing at the University of South Carolina.

“It will really bring excitement in a down economy,” she said. “There is a lot of consumer buzz.”

Two weeks ago, Edens & Avant announced it will bring in Whole Foods to anchor Cross Hill Market, a shopping center it is redeveloping at the former Kroger grocery store that sits at the intersection of Devine Street, Cross Hill Road and Fort Jackson Boulevard.

Whole Foods Coming to Columbia

Columbia will get its first Whole Foods next year as Edens & Avant tries to breathe new life into a long-defunct shopping center on Devine Street.

The sought-after organic grocer will anchor Cross Hill Market, a new 74,000-square-foot, $23 million development at the former Kroger at the intersection of Cross Hill Road and Devine Street.

Whole Foods, which has stores in Greenville and Charleston, will occupy about 38,000 square feet of the shopping center, developers announced this morning. The rest of the center will feature a dozen or more shops and restaurants. And a new walkway will connect the center to nearby neighborhoods.
