A black Laurens County church is asking a judge to affirm that it owns a historic downtown building that for more than a decade has been home to a self-proclaimed “KKK Museum” selling Klan-related merchandise.

New Beginning Baptist Church on Tuesday filed a lawsuit in Laurens County civil court accusing the owner of The RedNeck Shop, John Howard, and others of filing deeds to transfer ownership of the old Echo Theatre building to other Klan members — a move the church claims ignores its rightful ownership.

The church has owned the property since 1997 — a year after the shop opened — when its original owner deeded the property to the church, the suit alleges. The only condition in transferring ownership to the church is that Howard be allowed to operate the business until he dies, according to the suit.
