Owners of AgFirst Building Seeking Landmark Status

The new owner of the former AgFirst building in downtown Columbia is seeking landmark status for the iconic structure.

The request has already won approval from the city Planning Commission and is on the agenda of the city Design Development Review Commission, which meets at 4 p.m., Thursday, at the City Council chambers, 1737 Main St.

If the commission approves, the request will be forwarded to City Council for a vote.

Although the owner, FLB Apartments LLC, has not publicly announced plans for the building, initial reports indicate the 118,000-square-foot building at 1401 Hampton St. will be redeveloped as a mixed-use structure that includes apartments.

Receiving landmark status would allow the developer to apply for a variety of tax credits offered by city and county government.
