Building Boom Follows Predictions for Recovery

Dr. Bruce Yandle, dean emeritus of Clemson University’s College of Business and Behavioral Science, looked prophetic this week after a bank and a surgery center broke ground on new facilities on the Waccamaw Neck.

Yandle said an increase in construction would be the first signal that the local economy is on the rise during a presentation to the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments economic outlook forum in Litchfield in March.

South Atlantic Bank officials expect to finish a 4,000 square foot building on Highway 17 north of the Hammock Shops by late fall. Officials from South Atlantic and builder Coastal Structures participated in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday morning on site bordered by Lachicotte Drive. The builder has moved 2,200 cubic yards of dirt to the site after clearing large pine trees last month. The new building will have a similar Lowcountry look and feel to the bank’s offices in Myrtle Beach and Murrells Inlet.

Plans have been submitted for a luxury apartment complex in the Carolina Park planned community in the north end of Mount Pleasant.

Atlanta-based development firm SWH Residential Partners is seeking to construct The Grove at Carolina Park. The 280-unit luxury apartment community is planned to be constructed on 20 acres of land on Park Avenue Boulevard, across from a retail center and Roper St. Francis’ Mount Pleasant Hospital.

SWH Residential recently filed paperwork seeking a coastal zone consistency certificate from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. John Tirrill, a managing partner at the firm, was not immediately available for comment this afternoon.

This marks the latest development in the 1,700-acre planned community, which is off U.S. Highway 17. The Carolina Park project has been approved for 2,030 homes to be constructed over several years. So far, hundreds of homes have been constructed in the community.
