Walgreens to Anchor Charleston Mixed Use Development

Walgreens, a drugstore with the mantra “at the corner of happy and healthy,” soon will be at a high-profile corner on the Charleston peninsula.

Plans filed with the city show the pharmacy giant will be the anchor of the former Millennium Music building at 380 King St. that’s being redeveloped for multiple tenants.

Walgreens will occupy the central first-floor space with the main entrance facing King and Calhoun streets across from Marion Square. The property is being redeveloped by an affiliate of Roswell, Ga.-based Werner Real Estate Holdings, which paid $12 million for the building in 2006.

The owners could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

City planner Tim Keane said Charleston officials made an effort to attract other businesses to anchor the site. “All different types of tenants have been discussed for that property for years,” Keane said. “We did work with the property owner to get some other anchor tenants for that corner, and none of those could work out.”
