CU-ICAR Developing $9M Research One Building

Preliminary design work has started for a 75,000-square-foot building with 22,000 square feet of high-bay research space at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research. The Research One building has a projected cost of $9 million, according to the architect, LS3P of Greenville.

CU-ICAR Executive Director Fred Cartwright said the building slated to be completed in 2016 is already needed.

“Now that the auto industry has roared back like a lion, we have a lot of interest in companies coming to the Upstate, and we don’t have any space to put them,” Cartwright said.

CU-ICAR spokesman Peter Hull said in an email Thursday that the building, which will include 53,000 square feet of office space in the upper three floors, will complete Technology Neighborhood 1 at the campus in Greenville. The flexible design is intended to accommodate research work by the university and startup companies.
