New Construction Up in Columbia

Six years ago Columbia was in the middle of a renaissance. New high-rise office buildings were sprouting up on Main Street. Condos and apartment complexes mushroomed around downtown. New hotels, restaurants and bars seemed to pop up almost overnight from Harbison to the Northeast to the Vista.

Then the boom went to bust, here and around the country, and darkness descended on commercial development.

Flash forward through the muck of the Great Recession and its aftermath. And today, rays of light are returning. The cranes and the welding torches are once again at work as the thaw begins. A quick count of just the big projects around town shows construction topping $1.3 billion.
