Apartments Plannned for Garco Site in North Charleston

Charleston County considered moving its recycling processing center to North Charleston’s 40-acre Garco site, but that plan has been trashed — and plans to redevelop the property for apartments can move ahead.

Still, North Charleston City Councilman Bob King was upset that his former council colleague and current County Administrator Kurt Taylor did not tell nearby residents what was going on behind the scenes. “Whatever their plans were, the community didn’t know anything about it,” King said Thursday. “They’re acting like a thief in the night. … Maybe they’re doing the same thing to other communities. Why was it such a secret?”

Attempts to reach Taylor on Thursday were unsuccessful, but county spokeswoman Tracey Amick said, “The county is looking at a number of potential sites for a possible new Materials Recovery Facility, but nothing has been decided or presented to County Council.”
