An Opportunity for Student Housing Developers

College of Charleston leaders say students benefit from living near campus, and they are hoping to work with a private developer to build more housing for them.

The college this fall put out a request for proposals from developers interested in building apartment-style housing for 350 to 400 students within walking distance of the downtown campus. Proposals are due Jan. 19.

Anthony McAlister, of McAlister Development Co. and owner of Charleston College Housing, said he is planning to submit a proposal. His group will seek conceptual approval for an eight-story building near the corner of King and George streets from the Board of Architectural Review at its meeting Wednesday.
