S.C. Site Considered for Tire Manufacturer, Distributor

South Carolina is competing with North Carolina and Louisiana for a project on the scale of Greer’s BMW plant that could bring as many as 1,500 jobs to the state.

A North Carolina official said the development, known as Project Soccer, could be announced this year and involve a tire manufacturing and distribution company the official wouldn’t identify. S.C. Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt on Wednesday wouldn’t discuss pending economic development projects or confirm those on which officials are working. “We will look forward to days when we announce projects,” Hitt said.

North Carolina state Rep. Dewey L. Hill, a Democrat representing Brunswick and Columbus counties in the eastern part of the state, told that the project’s timetable isn’t certain but “it’s going to move fairly quickly.”
