East Cooper Hospital Building Sold

The shuttered East Cooper Regional Medical Center is about to be resuscitated.

A Kentucky company that provides specialty care and rehabilitation services for long-term hospital patients has finalized the purchase of the former Mount Pleasant hospital, it was announced Tuesday.

Lexington, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare Inc. plans to move its downtown Charleston facility to the property near U.S. Highway 17 and Bowman Road by the mid-2012. The seller was Tenet Healthcare Corp.

The sale price was not available, but Kindred has estimated that the relocation, including the purchase of the hospital and renovations, would cost about $30 million. The company is planning to incorporate 59 long-term, acute-care beds and 35 subacute-care beds in the new location.
