Charleston County Park & Recreation Purchases Hunting Club

The Charleston County Park & Recreation Commission has purchased a former hunting club in West Ashley.

The commission spent $4.9 million to buy the former Bulow Hunt Club property, which comprises 322 acres abutting 2,000 acres of parkland the commission and the city of Charleston already own.

Nearly $4.1 million of that total was paid by half-cent sales tax funding from Charleston County’s Greenbelt Bank Board. The parks department will pay the other $825,000 to support the appraised value of improvements to the site.

The land is primarily forest, with pine and hardwoods, as well as freshwater wetlands, according to a news release announcing the purchase. It and the adjacent park land serve as an uninterrupted habitat area. The commission said in the release that the land “has the potential to host a variety of threatened or endangered species.” Portions of the Bulow land are under conservation easement with Ducks Unlimited.
