Columbia’s Richland Mall Still Chasing Anchor Tenants

The owners of Richland Mall brought hope to Forest Acres residents when they bought the struggling retail center in February 2010.

But nearly a year and a half later, the 700,000-square-foot mall – with large, dark stretches and sometimes, it seems, more mall walkers than shoppers – looks largely unchanged. And a major prospect for the mall, natural and organic grocer Whole Foods, recently chose another nearby site to enter the Columbia market.

That has left some people questioning whether the group of local owners will be able to turn around the retail center, which sits in one of the most affluent areas of the state at the corner of Forest Drive and Beltline Boulevard.
