Plans for Luxury Hotel in Downtown Charleston Advance

A proposal to transform the Mendel Rivers Federal Building on Meeting Street in downtown Charleston into a luxury hotel got the go-ahead for an additional 41 rooms from the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals last week.
The new plan calls for a 161-room property, thanks to a smaller food service area and elimination of a corridor, according to Tim Keane, city director of planning, preservation and sustainability.

The same group, Dewberry Capital, received approval on the 120-room lodging more than a year ago.

The modernist office building has remained empty for a decade because of asbestos and leaks, and some people argue against salvaging the property in its current state.
