Average vacancy in the Charleston-area apartment market was 9.1% as of February, according to a new report from Charlotte-based research firm Real Data.

The company, which produces biannual market reports based on conditions in February and August, reported last fall that vacancy was about 9.8% in Charleston.

Two years ago, in February 2009, the area reached a vacancy rate of 15.3%, which was the highest in Real Data’s 10 years of history for the region.

“There has been a steady demand for apartments as troubled for-sale housing conditions remain,” Real Data said in a news release.
