City Of Columbia Looks to Add New Industrial Park

By
– Columbia Regional Business Report

Columbia leaders including Mayor Steve Benjamin think the city needs a new industrial park to spur growth. But one real estate expert advises that the city act cautiously.

Benjamin made the call for the new industrial park in his state of the city address on Jan. 18, among a list of economic improvements that he believes the community needs to grow.

Jim Gambrell, who heads Columbia’s economic development office, said he has been advocating for a new park for years. The city’s only park, built off Bluff Road in the 1960s, has been full for years, and never really offered the kind of large sites that Columbia wants to offer, Gambrell said.

Columbia should offer sites big enough to host manufacturing firms, which most likely would be high-tech companies, Gambrell said.
