Home foreclosures continued to rise across the nation in 2010, but at a much slower rate than in South Carolina, which had more than 33,000 notices of foreclosure filed against homeowners struggling with soaring unemployment.

Foreclosure filings were up 31 percent last year over the 25,163 S.C. residential properties that received notices in 2009, according to the online foreclosure marketer RealtyTrac, and 121 percent above the 14,995 foreclosure filings in 2008.

Nationally, the number of foreclosures last year rose only 2 percent over 2009, still hitting a record 2.9 million U.S. properties, and 23 percent above the filings in 2008.
