The new owners of the Marriott at Renaissance Park in Spartanburg have agreed to invest $1 million in the property, which has been a cornerstone of the city’s downtown revitalization efforts.

Improvements to the hotel will include renovations to the guest rooms, lobby, restaurant and public spaces, said Andrew Cajka, president of Southern Hospitalty Group LLC.

Greenville-based Southern Hospitality formed a partnership and Jimmy Gibbs, president and CEO of Gibbs International Inc. – a privately held trading company in Spartanburg specializing in textile equipment – to acquire the hotel. The partnership is called SMR Hospitality LLC, and ownership is expected to change hands Jan. 14. The hotel’s 95 employees will remain.
