Charleston Hotels Enjoyed Big 2010

Opening day at the new Hyatt Place near the Charleston Area Convention Center probably tells the 2010 hotel sales story best.

The first room at the six-story property went to a Boeing Co. employee. Then a glut of cruise ship passengers, either returning from the Caribbean early or delayed for the next voyage, filled the hotel’s lobby in March for what was supposed to be a “soft launch.”

The hotel finished 2010 with $2.1 million in revenue, well ahead of the $1.9 million projection, area sales director Judy Parsons said. Those numbers reflect an uptick in government and corporate travel last year, she said, plus business developments unique to the Charleston area, including aerospace giant Boeing building an assembly line here.
