Greenville area home sales dropped 21.9% in September compared to the same month last year, according to new figures from the Greater Greenville Association of Realtors.

A 17% and 21.7% drop were reported in July and August, respectively, compared to the same months in 2009.

Year-to-date sales, however, are up 1.7% with 5,100 homes sold. The average price of a home, $173,330, and the median price, $143,000, is up 3% and 2.1%, respectively.

Sales spiked earlier in the spring and summer as buyers took advantage of since-expired federal tax credits. In September, 466 homes were sold, down from 475 homes sold in August.
