Columbia, USC Won’t Sell Vista Site Because Of Lack of Financing Details

A Charlotte developer said Thursday he hasn’t given up on building a 20-story residence tower geared toward USC students somewhere in downtown Columbia nine months after first proposing it.

“It’s not totally dead,” said developer Robert Threatt, who represents an undisclosed group of developers said to be interested in building the $100 million tower. “We’re still investigating it.”

USC and the city have declined to sell a block of property near the Colonial Life Arena to Threatt because he would not reveal his financial bankers.

Threatt said his partners planned to self-finance the project, but he didn’t want to reveal them for fear of kidnapping and other security concerns. However, the group was willing to put 5 percent of the construction costs in escrow.
