Spartanburg Leaders Confident About Economy

County officials said they won’t let the loss of more than 500 jobs tied to Caterpillar Inc.’s new $426 million manufacturing plant hinder economic development efforts during the last half of the year.

Caterpillar announced last Friday that it had chosen a site in Winston-Salem, N.C., for the 850,000-square-foot facility instead of sites in Spartanburg and Montgomery, Ala.

The move stunned local leaders, who had worked to woo the heavy-equipment manufacturer and put together an incentives package they said was equal to or greater than North Carolina’s $75 million offer.
