New Life for Columbia’s Main Street?

When Mark Plessinger opened his Frame of Mind store on Main Street three years ago, he saw the downtrodden area as a blank canvas for creating a thriving arts district.

Now some say the area, which the city has struggled to develop in recent years, is on the cusp of an arts-driven retail boom as groups of artists stake their claims and the Nickelodeon and Mast General Store prepare to open next year.

“This time next year, you’re going to see a completely different street,” said Plessinger, whose store, across from the Columbia Museum of Art, sells eyeglass frames and local art and jewelry in an area that also includes the Columbia Conservatory of Dance and the new S&S Art Supply, which opened last week.
