Home sales in York, Chester and Lancaster counties jumped more than 30 percent in May over the previous month, helped in part by federal tax credits aimed at qualified buyers who signed contracts by April 30.

There were 237 homes sold in the tri-county area last month, up from 181 in April. That’s also a 30 percent increase in sales over May 2009.

Year-to-date sales are up 15 percent over 2009, according to the S.C. Realtors trade group.

Statewide, home sales are up 22 percent year to date over 2009. This comes as sales nationwide went sharply in the opposite direction during May, dropping to their lowest point in decades.
