Property Tax Appeals Piling Up In Myrtle Beach

By
– The Sun News

When Thomas Jones opened his 2009 property tax bill, the amount surprised him because he had his North Myrtle Beach house reappraised just a few months earlier so he could refinance, and the numbers didn’t match.

Jones appealed the assessment to Horry County in October and as of January he had not heard from the assessor’s office, but he wasn’t the only one. The office has been backed up handling more than 11,000 appeals from Horry County property owners – four times more than in average tax years. The overload has cash-strapped residents worried about when or if they will receive refunds on their appealed property taxes, and with the looming potential for tens of thousands of dollars that may need to be refunded to residents, county staff are concerned about the implications the appeals may have on the current year and next year’s budgets.
