Myrtle Beach Businesses Reconsider Plans For Future after Weak Summer

More area businesses than usual may have to cut back or shut down completely at the end of this summer because of the weak economy, a local economist says.

“Ultimately, 2009 is going to be a summer where hotels, restaurants and retails are all seeing flat or negative growth in terms of overall revenue,” said Don Schunk, a research economist at Coastal Carolina University. “From hotels to restaurants to other retail, there are certainly some local establishments that are going to look at their books at end of the summer and realize they’re not going to make it at all or they’re going to have to shut down earlier than usual for the season and try to cut labor costs and try again next summer.”
