Empty SC Homes Get New Tax Break

By

Developers and contractors with finished homes in South Carolina that haven’t sold will get a new tax break starting this fall.

A new law will allow property taxes to be paid just on the land, not on the home itself, The Post and Courier of Charleston reports.

The tax break came about in large part because of the efforts of Charleston contractor Chuck Bennett, who figures he will save about $16,000 on two houses he completed but hasn’t been able to sell. One of them is a four-bedroom, four-bath home on the market since it was finished in 2006, even though the asking price has dropped from $1 million to $635,000.
