Developer Drops Fight Over Columbia Flood Plain

A company that once planned a $1 billion “city within a city” on a Congaree River flood plain south of Columbia agreed Tuesday to drop its eight-year legal fight to get federal regulators to loosen building restrictions on thousands of acres of the farmland.

Columbia Venture’s decision, filed in federal court, is a major victory for groups opposed to building in the flood plain off Interstate 77, between Bluff Road and the river.
