Charleston Hotel Occupancy Still Off From Past Two Years, Operating Near 2006 Levels

Charleston County hotels averaged 65% occupancy during August, down from about 70% in August 2008.

Overall demand for rooms dropped about 8% from the same month last year, according to a monthly report by the College of Charleston’s Office of Tourism Analysis.

August’s occupancy rate dropped from stronger showings in the spring and earlier summer months of this year, when occupancy ranged from 71% to 77%. But Perrin Lawson, deputy director of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that August drop has been the norm in recent years, driven largely by the slowdown in family vacations as school starts back.
