Charleston-Area Hotel Occupancy Declines

Charleston County’s average hotel occupancy rate was 48.8% during January, according to a monthly report from the College of Charleston’s Office of Tourism Analysis.

Hotel occupancy rate is one indicator of tourism activity. Though January is typically a relatively slow month for tourism in Charleston, the month’s occupancy rate was down about 10% from the same month in 2008.

The average daily rate that hotels charged was $98.14, a drop of 5.7% from January 2008, when the average rate countywide was $104.11.
