Taxes Could Rise On Some New Greenville Homes

A recent change in state law means you could begin paying taxes much sooner after building on your property, which will add new revenues to county tax coffers though Greenville County officials say they don’t know how much.

State law now allows counties to put new property on the tax rolls the quarter after it’s occupied instead of the following year. A measure currently before the council would do just that.

Currently, a home finished in January doesn’t go on the tax rolls until the following January and the first tax bill wouldn’t come due until the January after that, said Councilman Bob Taylor, who chairs the Finance Committee.
