Greenville County home builders detect a ray of sunshine in the economic statistics they hope bodes well for an early turnaround in the region’s depressed housing market.

The number of people looking for work, measured by the number of people filing for benefits with the Employment Security Commission, soared to 17,168 in December from 9,779 last March, an increase of 7,389 people seeking work.

But dig a little deeper into the numbers and more hopeful data emerges. In Greenville County, there were 208,449 employed in December, just 1,023 fewer people than were employed in January 2008.
