Marine Industrial Park Aims For Boom

Horry County officials say a marine industrial park proposed for Bucksport could attract boat-building companies, bring new jobs and diversify the area’s tourism-focused economy despite a relatively poor year for the boating industry.

With development of the park several years away, though, officials hope to cash in when the economy rebounds.

“What we’re trying to focus on is minimizing our weaknesses – the fact that we don’t have an interstate highway in place right now – and maximizing our strengths,” said Hugh Owens, the president and chief executive of the Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corp. “We’re one of the few communities that are situated on the Intracoastal Waterway the way we are.”
