Lodging Industry Expanding Locally

Upstate market remains healthier than regional, national

The Greenville-Spartanburg area’s lodging industry is healthier than many other markets in the Southeast, according to the head of the state’s hospitality association.

But the effects of the weak economy are being felt by the industry in the state and region, which expects to gain hundreds of new rooms in the coming months.

Tom Sponseller, executive director of the South Carolina Hospitality Association, said the occupancy rate for the Greenville-Spartanburg area was down 3.9 percent during the past 10 months, while the average daily rate during the same period was up 3.8 percent.
