Growth vs. Preservation Battle Will Be Rejoined At the Corners

A rural landmark crossroads at Sea Island Parkway and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive known as The Corners comprises a few empty lots, a new stoplight and several small stores — an art gallery, an empty hotel, a restaurant, two gas stations and gift shops.
It doesn’t look like a battleground.

But recent proposals to build chain stores in the St. Helena Island community have stirred debate over cultural preservation and economic development. The outcome might direct the island’s future.
