Clemson Council Gives Initial Approval to Lowe’s Plans

– Greenville News

Clemson City Council gave initial approval Monday to a proposed zoning change that would allow Lowe’s to build a home center on Issaqueena Trail at U.S. 123.

“Change is going to come,” said council member Elouise James, who added that the city has worked very hard to see that there will be as little impact on residential neighborhoods as possible.

Development of the site has been controversial. Residents successfully fought off a Wal-Mart several years ago, and an overflow crowd filled City Hall at a recent public hearing to oppose Lowes’ plans as well, citing traffic, noise and other potential disturbances.

David Harner, vice president of development at Myrtle Beach-based Paramount Development, has said the $17 million development would provide about 120 jobs and an estimated $130,000-$140,000 in taxes to the city.
