Foreclosures and other problems related to the housing market are giving the apartment industry a boost in some areas of the state.

Donald Wood, executive director of the South Carolina Apartment Association, said the industry is “getting some of those residuals from people that are losing their homes and having to find alternate sources of housing.”

The impact may not be the same in Greenville.

“I’m sure it has at some level, but maybe not to the level it has been at a national scale,” said Michael Holmes, president of Easlan Capital, which has apartment communities in both North and South Carolina. “We still have residents that are buying homes.”

Greenville ranked 91 and Columbia was 81 in the top 100 U.S. Metro Foreclosure Market listed in RealtyTrac’s 2008 third quarter foreclosure report. South Carolina was number 22 in the top 100 states with property foreclosure filings.
