Circuit City Closing 155 Stores; None in SC

Circuit City Stores Inc. said today it is pulling the plug on about 20 percent of its U.S. stores in an effort to return the nation’s No. 2 consumer electronics retailer to profitability.

Circuit City Stores Inc., the Richmond, Va.-based company, said today it will shutter 155 of its more than 700 stores in 12 markets by Dec. 31. The move will cut thousands of jobs. None of Circuit City’s 10 locations throughout South Carolina will be affected. Nineteen of the company’s 25 stores in Georgia are closing, and only one of the 21 locations in North Carolina.
