Mega-Sites Give States Edge When Recruiting

Volkswagen announced this summer it would invest $1 billion in a new Chattanooga, Tenn., plant to build a new minivan for North American drivers.

Last year, Toyota Motor Corp. chose a site in Blue Springs, Miss., to spend $1.3 billion on a facility to manufacture Highlander sport utility vehicles.

Both companies brushed off sites in South Carolina. The state didn’t make either company’s shortlist.

But economic development officials here are certainly taking note of the common thread in these decisions: mega-sites.
