Hilton Head Island can move ahead with a key part of its plan to redevelop the aging Dunnagans Alley area, and it can do so without having to spend millions to relocate a lumber company, town officials said this week.

The town’s Public Facilities Committee on Tuesday endorsed a plan to build a traffic circle at the intersection of Dunnagans Alley and Arrow Road, the first part of a major revitalization plan the town hopes will pump new life into one of the island’s oldest areas.

The plan avoids having to relocate the large Espy Lumber building to an adjacent 1.6-acre piece of town-owned land, a move that could have cost more than $3 million. The town’s consultant found a way to install the traffic circle without making any major changes to the Espy site.
