A $20 million development, anchored by one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, is planned on Woodruff Road at the site of the BJ’s Wholesale Club, two Greenville developers said Wednesday.

David Glenn, chief executive officer of Centennial American Properties LLC, and G. Jackson Hughes Jr., whose firm is Hughes Commercial Properties Inc., said they have purchased the 10.45-acre site and plan to develop 116,596 square feet of retail space.

The anchor tenant will be Academy Sports + Outdoors, which has more than 100 stores across the Southeastern United States, including one in Spartanburg.

The privately held company, based in Katy, Texas, will occupy about 86,000 square feet of the new development.
