Properties to Be Auctioned For Taxes Nearly Double

Almost twice as many properties are in danger of being auctioned at Beaufort County’s annual property tax sale than there were a year ago, a reflection of the troubled economy’s impact on residents and businesses, the county’s treasurer said.

If taxes aren’t paid by Oct. 3 on the nearly 2,900 properties, they go up for auction at the county’s Oct. 6 tax sale. Of those properties, about 900 are owned by businesses, and 2,000 belong to individuals.

At this time last year, taxes were past due on about 1,500 properties.

“We’re very concerned about the number and also concerned that we’ll have to have a two-day tax sale,” said treasurer Joy Logan. Tax sales typically have been held in one day.

Logan also is concerned her office will be busy before the tax sale. In the past, residents and businesses have made last-minute payments the week before the sale. This year, Logan is asking people to come in earlier because she expects her office to be bustling because taxes are owed on so many more properties.
