“We found what we were looking for, the potential for mutually beneficial development, the advantage of location, an excellent work force and a committed and investor-friendly government. We are happy to be here.”

These were the words Dubai-based Jafza International managing director Chuck Heath presented to a crowded Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College Student and Community Life Center Tuesday night.

Heath’s presentation was about a year to the day since Jafza, a subsidiary of Dubai World, first announced it intended to invest between $600-700 million in Orangeburg County near Santee.

Plans call for a logistics, manufacturing and distribution hub that could mean about 6,000 direct jobs.

“South Carolina is our flagship in the U.S. market,” said Heath, who was the guest speaker of the annual Orangeburg and Calhoun County Industry Appreciation Week banquet. “We are here for the long haul and our feasibility study shows immense prospects for the state, for the county, for the local communities and of course for ourselves.”

Heath said preliminary work on the development of a 1,300-acre logistics, manufacturing and distribution park is nearing completion.

Currently, Jafza has completed the first draft of its master plan with finalization expected within the next two weeks.
