Look for Greer’s population to double in size by 2020, assistant city administrator Mike Sell said.

Sell said the city population could tip into the 40,000 range within a dozen years based on the current growth rate.

He took the city’s pulse in a “State of the City” report he prepared as part of a comprehensive planning process involving citywide committees expected to be finished by spring.

“Plans should be flexible, and you should know that as quick as you make one you’re likely to need to change it in fairly short order,” said Dr. Andy Felts, director of the Riley Center for Urban Affairs and Policy Studies, College of Charleston. “It’s a living document that needs revisiting at least once every year if not more.”

In the two decades from 1970 to 1990, Greer’s population stayed fairly constant in the 10,000s. It leaped to 16,843 in 2000 and is expected to top 25,000 by 2010 on its way to the 40,000 mark.
