If the economy is in the dumps, somebody forgot to tell the city of Clemson and businesses interested in starting there.

Under construction are new hotels, a drug store, a retail/condo complex and more.

As many as three different overnight accommodation/condo units are under construction or being considered along the Highway 123 corridor, said Bob Vecchio, zoning and codes administrator for the city.

A Clemson chamber official said retirees, Clemson football fans and other issues a helping fuel the boom.

“Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of retirees asking the Chamber for information about Clemson,” said Bill Caruthers, interim president of the Clemson Area Chamber of Commerce. “Availability of adequate accommodations for football fans and for people looking to relocate is very important and we should be in good shape on this front.

“Our climate along with people trending away from Florida and other coastal areas are factors not to be overlooked,” he said.

Site work has begun on the Holiday Inn Express beside the Days Inn on U.S. 123.

“Permits were recently approved and the project is moving forward,” he said. “This will be a 90-room motel, according to current plans. The project should be out of the ground within 30 days with occupancy in August of 2009.”
