Pier Purchase Gets Final Nods

The town of Surfside Beach is soon to be the new owner of the Surfside Pier

Surfside Beach—The Surfside Beach Accommodations Tax Committee and the town council gave final approval to the purchase of the Surfside Pier.

These approvals came after the contract with the pier owner was already signed.
The A-tax committee approved the transfer of $870,000 in A-tax funds to an enterprise fund that will pay for the purchase and upkeep of the pier.

The funds had originally been slated to go to beach renourishment but the state and federal governments picked up the tab for most of the last renourishment project.

After getting assurances from committee member Gary Loftus that any concerns the state accommodations committee had about the use of the money for the pier had been dissuaded, the committee gave unanimous approval to the fund transfer.

The town council Tuesday night gave unanimous approval of a resolution supporting the purchase and the use of the A-tax money.

Administrator Ed Booth said he would take the resolution and other supporting documents to the state to get their final approval.

The town purchased the pier from the owner, the Scalise Company, for $2.5 million.
Booth said the final purchase price was $50,000 less than the last appraisal.
