Brightwater, a continuing care retirement community in Carolina Forest, celebrated a development milestone Tuesday with a “topping-out ceremony” for the community clubhouse.

Billed as the community’s centerpiece, the clubhouse will include a library, media room, cafe and full-service dining.

“We’re excited with the progress,” Executive Director Tiffany Brazen said to future and prospective residents who attended Tuesday’s ceremony. “It’s going to be an amazing community.”

Brightwater is one of several senior living complexes in the works for the Grand Strand, which is seeing more demand for such services as the population surges with retiring baby boomers.

Another senior living complex, being developed by Pulliam Investment Co. Inc. and Beacon Communities Inc., is planned for the southern part of the Grand Strand, off S.C. 707 just south of the TPC of Myrtle Beach Golf Course. The $20 million complex is expected to open next year.

Those ages 65 and older are expected to make up 36 percent of the Grand Strand’s population by 2025. They made up 21 percent of the population of Horry and Georgetown counties and Brunswick County, N.C., in the 2000 census.

The more than $94 million Brightwater development is expected to open in the spring 2009.
