Car dealership takes its case to county to take over O.C. Welch site

Plans to move the BMW dealership currently near Target on U.S. 278 to the former O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury site just west of Tanger Outlet Center 1 hit a snag Monday.

Project planners and county officials disagreed during a Southern Beaufort County Corridor Review Board meeting about landscaping at the site.

Truitt Rabun, the land planner on the project, said county staff had previously indicated the property, including the landscaping, would not have to meet county requirements if only the building was being renovated.

The O.C. Welch dealership was built before current county landscaping requirements were adopted and fails to meet some of those rules.

Wallace Wiggins, manager of contractor Sierra Design Build of Statesboro, said their client, Hilton Head BMW, had already put about $200,000 into the project.

The dealership did so assuming it would be held to the rules that were in place when the building was originally constructed.

But Steve Wilson, chairman of the review board, said the board has the power to hold all aspects of the project to current county standards. The board did say it would allow a smaller buffer between U.S. 278 and the dealership than required as long as the plants in it provide adequate screening.
