The rumor mills can rest. After much speculation, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Staples have filed permits to build stores adjacent to Kohl’s in a new shopping center under construction on Clemson Boulevard.

According to the permits, Dick’s will be in a $3.42 million, 52,000-square-foot store at 140 Fritz Drive. Staples will occupy an $11.24 million, 19,981-square-foot store.

Mike Black, a spokesman for the office supply chain, said Staples’ store is actually expected be about 20,390 square feet, the company’s standard store size. Staples will carry 7,000 products and include a copy and print center as well as in-store technology consultants.

“We’re really excited to bring Staples to Anderson,” Black said.

Staples looks for areas with a thriving small business community, but Anderson also is a fast growing community, which makes it a good market for the office supply chain. Black said Staples will employ about 30 full and part-time workers and should be open in early 2009.

The shopping center is slated to be complete sometime this year. RealtyLink, the Greenville-based developers behind the project, have said they also plan to locate a fast-food chain and coffee shop on two outparcels at the front of the property.
