A big chain that caters to owners of dogs, cats and other domestic creatures is set to start chasing after that increasingly competitive market in Mount Pleasant.

Petco plans to open its first location in the three-county region at Wando Crossing, in an empty spot near the Circuit City electronics store.

The San Diego-based company is shooting for a late July opening, with a grand opening to follow a few weeks later, said Ryan May of Petco’s communications department.

The 14,000-square-foot store will employ about 20 to 25 full- and part-time workers, he said. It also will feature a full-service grooming salon.

May said the company was drawn to Mount Pleasant because of its growing roster of retailers and rooftops. “We like to put our store in places where there’s a lot of retail,” he said. “It makes it convenient for customers.”

Petco will be jockeying for East Cooper business with another national player, PetSmart, and a smattering of smaller operators, including Pet Emporium, Dolittle’s, Indigo Creek Pet Supplies and Kreature Comforts.

The nearest existing Petco location is in Walterboro. The company, which has more than 850 stores nationwide, also has been identified as a future tenant in St. Andrews Center as part of a major overhaul of the West Ashley property.

While privately held Petco offers some animals for sale, along with accessories, food and other goods, it does not peddle cats and dogs. “We adopt the ‘Think adoption first’ philosophy,” May said.
